Tuesday 14th July saw the 3rd installment of the river Crake summer series of wild water races, the weather was kind (sunny with a gentle breeze) and there were over 20 competitors. All age groups were competitive with 3 of the juniors trying wavehoppers for the first time and Ruth McKenny took her first victory in the series, leaving it all wide open for the final race of the series in August..

Macclesfield Marathon Race

Macclesfield Marathon Race

The penultimate race of the north west Hasler series was run by Macclesfield canoe club on a stretch of very busy canal from the Adelphi Mill in Bollingdon through Macclesfield & back. Duddon were sitting at the top of the Hasler series table before the event & were looking to consolidate their lead, some of the parents & helper have been so inspired by the teams achievements this year that they chose this race to have a go themselves.

All the races set of without incidences except for the Div 5 K2 that were caught by wash from the back of the K1 boats and hit the banking hard with the front paddler (Alistair) getting a face full of nettles. It was a very busy day on a very narrow canal and paddlers were held up at nearly every bridge so trying to put some distance between you & other paddlers was hard so it came down to a 100m sprint to the finish when you got through the last bridge.

Duddon entered 2 x K2 boats into the Div 9 race, it was the very first race for 3 of the paddlers and they paddled magnificently and made the difference between the team finishing in 1st place in the team event beating Trentham into second by 1 point.

Paddlers of the day were Joanne Austin & Carol Stringer, spectators were so impressed with their paddling prowess that they made a video of their sprint finish which can now be seen on the Duddon canoe club website.
