This race started at Speirs Warf, Port Dundas, Glasgow. It finished at the Millennium Wheel, Falkirk. The distance was approximately 23.5 miles. Portages were required around the locks between Banknock and Bonnybridge in the last 5 miles of the stage. The start on Sunday 9th October was above the Millennium Wheel and the locks of the new Falkirk Interchange on the Union Canal. The finish was just before Lochrin Basin, Edinburgh. The distance was approximately 31 miles and as this was a contour canal there were no locks to portage. All competitors were required to navigate the entire length of the canals. There were mobile checkpoints in place to ensure that this was done. Competitors could portage in places other than around locks or natural blockages but at all times they had to follow the route of the canal and in no way shorten the course.
“The GE Challenge went well. We had lovely weather on the weekend; sunny with a slight headwind. Kat and I were unsupported so we carried our supplies with us for the respective 24 and 32 mile days.
Total time was 10:54 (I think) which we were happy with due to new boat and lack of training.”
